Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has named captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn internationals, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.
Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, however Irish rugby authorities says new Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "cover".
Following facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented the coach, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.
In a largely familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming URC match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen as the coach opting against calling up the province's Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced group of centre options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.
Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of Leinster's URC league games this season and featured in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.
The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Northern province lock Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris should the captain does not regain fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The national team will assemble in the capital on Monday before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
