Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
