Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers increasing in strength within the city.

Note: Revealing details for the third episode of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the central cast to embark on their own adventure, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Considering 13 cast members, it was evident from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be unworkable.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense combat and conflict-driven story mode where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might seem out of place, but the actions of episode 3 make it clear why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

First, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a intense opening clash with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise kicked off the campaign’s events—used the enemy for his personal gain, entering the secret base, striking the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in the northern region, north of the urban center, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each character has a individual motive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the companion and trusted friend, seeks revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a nasty location.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to execute the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their status as prominent individuals in House Halovar could help the party access places they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his deliverance and will now accompany him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • The rogue and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The healer defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This results in them few options but to travel to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

What’s Next?

From the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Viewers can expect discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
