Hellenic Police Boost Protection After Protests Against Israeli Passenger Liner

Hellenic officials have dramatically enhanced safety arrangements at two key harbors in an attempt to prevent demonstrators from targeting a passenger ship carrying Israeli tourists on an eleven-day Mediterranean journey.

Latest Demonstrations Prompt Increased Protection

The security reinforcement at Patras and Katakolo came after recent demonstrations when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata recently. Earlier, passengers aboard the same vessel were prevented from disembarking and the liner was compelled to change course to Cyprus after area inhabitants staged a protest on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"Despite the peace agreement, Israel is still continuing its military operations in Gaza," stated an educator who participated in the Kalamata protest. "Civilian, unarmed people are being slain."

Tourist Experience and Public Sentiment

From higher vantage points, passengers witnessed as demonstrators in Kalamata chanted: "You need the police, you're not wanted in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who worked throughout summer arranging peace demonstrations across Greece, asserted: "Those Israelis who endorse the policies of their administration aren't welcome here."

Geopolitical Background and Foreign Ties

A foreign policy analyst explained: "Due to close location and our longstanding relationships with the Arab world, the average Greek is more attuned to what is transpiring in Gaza than the typical central or north European."

"Greece is in a difficult position," he continued. "The State of Israel is considerably more vital for us as an ally than it is for many European nations."

Economic and Travel Consequences

National figures show that more than 600,000 Israeli travelers came to Greece in 2024, with forecasts of even higher numbers this year. This considerable inflow highlights the greatly strengthened connection between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek administrations maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.

Tactical Alliance and Regional Factors

From Athens' perspective, Israel constitutes not only a crucial counterweight to neighboring competitor Turkey but also offers the supplementary bonus of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to endanger its relations with Israel," remarked the analyst. "But from a ethical standpoint we must be more embracing, more measured, more committed to show the wrongdoings of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Demonstration Campaign and International Response

The magnitude of the Greek protest movement has surprised Israeli authorities. In recent months, the nation's diplomatic department counseled tourists to maintain a low profile, while local media characterized Athens as a "lost paradise" due to anti-Israeli graffiti appearing on buildings in the city center.

The head official of the Hebrew Communities Council in Greece expressed concern: "Certainly we're concerned. The kind of discourse we're encountering can rapidly transform into prejudiced."

Future Developments and Demands

Gradually, opponents have targeted Athens' tight relationships with Israel. As many as 5,000 people recently traveled to Crete to call for the shutdown of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO establishment that following the start of conflict in Gaza has served as a key refuelling post for US military ships, military jets and ships destined for Israel.

"Our efforts have produced results," stated a movement organizer. "Our main demand, now, is to stop any collaboration with Israel."
