Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
